Use gravity when you want hands‑off filtration at camp and can hang a bag. It’s efficient for groups and meal prep. Pumps shine when water is shallow, cold, or you need water on the move.
Pumps often deliver faster instantaneous flow, while gravity excels over time with less effort. For multiple liters, gravity feels easier; for quick fills from trickles, pumps win.
Gravity needs a hang point and hose routing; pumps work anywhere you can dip an intake. In windy treelines or barren rock, a compact pump can be simpler.
Both need periodic backflush/cleaning. Keep silt out of pumps, and protect gravity elements from freezing. Store dry and sanitize between trips to extend life.
Gravity is ideal for camp chores and group meals. Pumps are great for on‑trail top‑offs and shallow sources. Many teams carry both for flexibility.
