Suspended silt clogs filters and slows flow. Pretreatment improves clarity, extends cartridge life, and makes filtration less frustrating.
Use a bandana, coffee filter, or mesh screen to strain out large particles. Letting water settle before filtering also helps a lot.
Removing silt reduces the muddy taste and protects carbon stages that handle taste and odor. It also makes backflushing more effective.
In very dirty water, a small dose of alum or a flocculant can help particles settle. It’s optional; most trips only need simple straining and patience.
A couple of minutes of settling can save you many minutes of frustrated squeezing later. It’s a worthwhile trade when sources are silty.
